Wood River Ranch

Owning a dude ranch had long been one of Michael and Barbara Stough’s dreams. They purchased an existing ranch in 2007 near Cody, Wyoming, and opened it to guests in 2010.

A Ranch in the Old West Tradition

Because the Stoughs wanted the ranch to offer fine hospitality in the original dude ranch tradition, it took some time to make all the changes.

Major upgrades included:

  • Tearing down the old main building, which had structural flaws, and building a new log lodge with a workout facility, commercial kitchen, two Rumford Box fireplaces, dining and lounge areas, a pool room and a custom-made bar
  • Remodeling the bunkhouse from top to bottom
  • Remodeling the manager’s house
  • Adding an owner’s cabin
  • Building a bridge over the Wood River
  • Building a barn with stables and a corral for 12 horses
  • Retrofitting an old truck shed into two rustic fishing cabins
  • Restoring overgrazed sections of the property
  • Restoring the stream banks and improving the irrigation to prevent soil erosion
  • Improved the roads for access to all buildings

Some of the challenges included siting the buildings to take maximum advantage of the Shoshone National Forest views, and blending the log cabin esthetic with the most modern guest conveniences and comforts.

With horseback riding, pack trips, fishing, hunting, kayaking, and easy access to Cody, Wood River Ranch now offers one of the most comprehensive and luxurious ranch experiences in the area. To plan your stay, visit the Wood River Ranch website. You can also catch us on Facebook
